New York Sea Grant - Marine Heritage Trail

Discover the Marine Life of New York
ABOUT NEW YORK SEA GRANT
New York Sea Grant (NYSG) is one of the largest Sea Grant programs in the United States. It is a cooperative program between the State University of New York and Cornell University. Since its foundation in 1971, NYSG has represented a statewide network of integrated research, education, and extension services. These services promote coastal community economic vitality, environmental sustainability, and citizen awareness and understanding of New York State's marine and Great Lake resources.
NYSG's mission is to "bring science to shore through high-quality research, outreach, and extension." Through a combination of talents of university scientists and specialists, the program helps develop and transfer science-based information to various coastal groups. NYSG currently supports around 38 research and outreach projects on issues such as shoreline protection, fisheries, aquatic invasive species, and water quality.
ABOUT THE MARINE HERITAGE TRAIL
Our website aims to educate tourists and the local public about the maritime ecosystem around New York City.
Some of the tabs contain information about specific topics such as oysters, whaling, hard clams, and finfish aquaculture. Each of these topics features a timeline of New York’s maritime ecosystem and history. By scrolling through each timeline, you can find interesting information and photos.
In addition to the timelines, our website also features an interactive story map that extends from New York City to Montauk to highlight marine-focused businesses. The map contains multiple pins that mark the location of various farms, fisheries, companies, and hatcheries in New York State. By clicking on each pin on the map, you can find the name of the farm or company, a link to its website, and contact information.
